KEY NOTIONS

Changing society with the commons

The course would focus how crucial and revolutionary the commons are to our economy.  The usual approach is based primarily on diagnosing the afflictions but is clueless where solutions are concerned. The result is apparent analysis without going to the root causes and without a focus on any real solutions. The emphasis is on short termed approach, finding immediate results for alleviating the problems at hand instead of creating a paradigm shift.

In the presence of existing capitalist structures with their rigidity, inertia and resistance to change, can the doctrine of commons be reinstated and be implemented.  The solution lies in creating a parallel set of economic and social structures that are conducive and that entail to the rules and regulations of the doctrine of commons. These structures (banks, supermarkets, corporate monopolies, etc.) can remain where they are and will become redundant with the disruptive changes that will come about with the doctrine of commons.

Introducing the Doctrine of the Common Good, to trace its virtues, principles and historicity and how they were manifested and implemented by various civilizations in different historical times, and how they can be reinstated in today’s changing geostrategic world.

In depth understanding of the concept the COMMONS, what brings and binds them together in a society, looking into the principles, properties and the processes that make the common strong and viable. Why historically common good was valued as a virtue and how it became the key to prosperity and flourishing.
